Summer Service Learning Program

Each year the ND Club of Ann Arbor hosts 2 current ND students for 8 weeks while they perform community service at the Hope Medical Clinic in Ypsilanti. This has been an eye-opening experience for the students as they see first-hand how people who have been marginalized in society survive.

For their service each student receives a tuition credit. Some of the students also take this assignment as a 3 credit course in Theology requiring additional readings and papers. These students come from all over the United States and overseas and have provided a great opportunity for the host family to interact with a current ND student, hear what's happening on campus, how the student is coping,  what they are learning and what are their future aspirations.

We look for individuals or families to act as hosts for 1 or 2 students for this spring and summer. Local host provides the student with a place to stay, assists the student with meals, and provides some adult supervision. Ideally we would like each student to spend the full 8 weeks with one host family as preferred by the Center of Social Concerns. However, if that is not possible, we would welcome your participation in this program, even as little as a 2 week commitment.

The individuals and/or families that have hosted these ND students over the past 25 years and have found this to be a rewarding experience. The ND Club of Ann Arbor will provide each student with transportation and expense money and the Board of Directors takes an active role in entertaining the student for the 8 weeks that  he or she is in the Ann Arbor area.
